It began as a way to make illustrations for a textbook after we could find no suitable tool for this purpose. Existing scene processors emphasized GUIs and/or photo-realism, both un-useful to us. We wanted to produce finely wrought, mathematically-based illustrations with no extraneous detail and be able to easily overlay TeX math and text. The input language is reminiscent of PSTricks, so will be easy to learn for current PSTricks users. License type: gpl Announcement text given by the package's contributor: - - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This package provides a few tools to ease using fonts (especially Truetype/Opentype ones) with Latex and fontinst: AFM2AFM - reencode .afm files; designed to replace fontinst's eencodefont for big .afm files. AUTOINST - simplify the use of the LCDF TypeTools by creating a command file for otftotfm, plus .fd and .sty files. CMAP2ENC - convert glyph indices in TrueType fonts without glyph names (such as Linotype Palatino) to Adobe glyph names. FONT2AFM - create font metrics; this is just a wrapper script around tools such as pf2afm, ttf2afm, pfm2kpx and ot2kpx. OT2KPX - extract all kerning pairs from an OpenType font. PFM2KPX - extract all kerning pairs from buggy .pfm files (the ones where pf2afm complains .notdef character occurred among kern pairs). SHOWGLYPHS - create a pdf file that shows all glyphs in a font. CTAN Policy: Documentation of packages

For some time, the CTAN team has been asking those who submit to the archive to provide documentation files that can easily be read by archive browsers. We often find packages, which may be of real use to other users, for which there is little prospect of a new submission. We propose to reserve the right to generate a PDF documentation file from the author's original resources, in such cases. Note that we do not intend this to take the place of author-supplied documentation, but rather only that we may generate documentation where there is now none (notably on older packages). On Sat, 30 Apr 2005, Harald Harders submitted a new package called gefileversion Location on CTAN: support/getfileversion/ License: LPPL >From the README: This simple shell script prints the version and date of a LaTeX class or style file. Syntax: getfileversion <file> This programme handles style files (extension .sty) and class files (extension .cls). If no extension is given, .sty is assumed. This is the initial version v0.1. CTAN: Move of protext system image

Last night, protext-1.2.exe, the MiKTeX installer image, appeared on CTAN. Protext is distributed as part of the annual user group distribution of discs to members and others. This evening, the new image has been moved from systems/texlive/Images to a new directory systems/protext It was felt that the texlive location for a MiKTeX-derived product was anomalous.
