CTAN:fonts/modes/modes.mf has been updated to version 3.8. All distributions that used modes.mf should update as soon as possible.
Per Don Knuth, this version no longer redefines the Metafont `end' primitive; it also no longer defines a `?' macro for help. Now you can say, e.g., mf 'fontmaking:=1; end' and it will work again.
In order to get the previous behavior, where the coding scheme, font family, and so on were output at the end of the run, the Metafont input should call the (new) mode_extra_info macro. Or incorporate the code in the font files themselves, as preferred.
the revised file has been installed in ctan fonts/modes/modes.mf
