a user reported on comp.text.tex that the footmisc para option produced overflow errors on very wide pages (such as those used by the a0poster class).

the new version of the footmisc package uses e-tex facilities, if they're available, to replace the previously vulnerable code (the bug is still there, for latex systems not built using e-tex).
