From the README: The ledmac package is for typesetting critical editions. It is a LaTeX port, and extension, of the plain TeX EDMAC, TABMAC and EDSTANZA macros.

Changes in version 0.5 (2004/04/04) o Added sidenotes (as a replacement for marginpar in numbered text) o All footnotes can be used in numbered text, not just critical ones o If used with the memoir class, multiple regular and critical indexes.
