CTAN Package update: rotating
by CTAN Announcements 19 May '08

19 May '08

I have installed an update of the rotating package (which I maintain). Changes in v 2.15 -- A fair bit of work on the .dtx, so that the manual is more useful -- Horizontal position of rotated floats on their page is controllable -- Redone the code on auto-rotating of floats in two-side documents; I believe i've solved the problem reported on comp.text.tex recently A .tds.zip file is available. Users can review the catalogue entry at http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/rotating.html or browse the distribution directory at http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/rotating/ (I would appreciate reports of continuing problems with auto-rotation of floats.) CTAN Update: animate
by CTAN Announcements 18 May '08

18 May '08

On Fri, 16 May 2008 Alexander Grahn submitted an update to the animate package. The package provides an interface to create portable, JavaScript driven PDF animations from sets of graphics files or from inline graphics, such as LaTeX picture environment, PSTricks or pgf/TikZ generated pictures, or just from typeset text. Location on CTAN: /macros/latex/contrib/animate License type: lppl Announcement text: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This updated version of `animate' uses a different method for animating graphics. The use of PDF Layers (OCGs) was dropped in favour of a Widget based method which produces animations that perform better in newer Acrobat Reader versions. The OCG based method is still available and can be selected by the package or command option `useocg'. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This package is located at http://mirror.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/animate . More information is at http://tug.ctan.org/info/?id=animate (if the package is new it may take a day for that information to appear). We are supported by the TeX Users Group http://www.tug.org . CTAN package update: siunitx

This package has been updated at tug.ctan.org. Thank you, Jim Hefferon Saint Michael's College .................................................................... CTAN package update: fancyvrb
by CTAN Announcements 13 May '08

13 May '08

Niall Mansfield has developed a patch to the current version of the fancyvrb package, and submitted it to me (as a conduit to ctan). The patch addresses a bug in the code related to selecting lines for verbatim printing: if first selected line == last selected line (i.e., only one line was to be printed), the package failed. The new version has been installed at cambridge ctan, and should be on its way around the world. Users may view the package's catalogue entry at: http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/help/Catalogue/entries/fancyvrb.html or browse the package directory tree: http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/fancyvrb/ The catalogue entry will be (modestly) updated on the web, overnight. License type: other-nonfree Announcement text: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MathType is a point and click mathematical equation editor. It is the full-featured version of the Equation Editor that comes with Microsoft Office and other products. While its mouse-centric user interface is somewhat the antithesis of TeX's, it has a number of features that may be of interest to members of the TeX community: - It works with many Windows applications that TeX does not work directly with, such as word processors, presentation programs like PowerPoint, and many more. You can even place equations in flowcharts made with programs like Visio. - It can produce TeX and LaTeX code from its equations. This can be helpful to someone learning TeX or just to take advantage of MathType's ability to work directly in math notation in order to get the nested braces right on a particularly gnarly equation. - You can even type TeX language directly into the MathType window. This allows you to get the best of both the WYSIWYG editing and TeX worlds. - MathType can also produce GIF files for websites and blogs and EPS files for desktop publishing chores. MathType is supplied here as a 30-day evaluation. If you decide to purchase MathType, you can use the Order MathType command within MathType itself to purchase a product key. CTAN Update: animate
by CTAN Announcements 10 May '08

10 May '08

On Fri, 9 May 2008 Alexander Grahn submitted an update to the animate package for creating portable PDF animations from graphics files and inline graphics. The package provides an interface to create portable, JavaScript driven PDF animations from sets of graphics files or from inline graphics, such as LaTeX picture environment, PSTricks or pgf/TikZ generated pictures, or just from typeset text. Location on CTAN: /macros/latex/contrib/animate License type: lppl Announcement text: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Animations produced with this updated version of animate.sty can now be played in the current Adobe Reader 8 at a reasonable speed as well. You might want to experiment with the graphical hardware acceleration feature that was introduced in Reader 8. Go to menu `Edit'-->`Preferences'-->`Page Display'-->`Rendering' to see whether hardware acceleration is available. A 2D GPU acceleration check box will be visible if a supported video card has been detected. (This is currently a Windows-only feature, though.) Feedback is highly welcome, as in my case (different platform + unsupported video card) there is no hardware acceleration available. Without acceleration, animations are still somewhat slower (by approx. 20 %) in Reader 8 than in older versions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This package is located at http://mirror.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/animate . CTAN Update: dvdcoll
by CTAN Announcements 29 Apr '08

29 Apr '08

On Sun, 27 Apr 2008, Josef Kleber submitted an update to the dvdcoll package. Location on CTAN: /macros/latex/contrib/dvdcoll Summary description: A class for typesetting DVD archives License type: lppl Announcement text: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Having lost the overview of my DVD archives, I simply could not remember if I already recorded the documentary running on TV that day. Further requirements were support for seasons of tv series and a list with all faulty or missing programs for rerecording. CTAN package update: dashrule

The package below has been updated at tug.ctan.org and should soon be at your favorite mirror. Thank you, Jim Hefferon Saint Michael's College ........................................................................ The following information was provided by our fellow contributor: Name of contribution: dashrule Author's name: Scott Pakin Location on CTAN: /macros/latex/contrib/dashrule Summary description: Draw dashed rules in LaTeX License type: lppl Announcement text: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The dashrule package makes it easy to draw a huge variety of dashed rules (i.e., lines) in LaTeX. dashrule provides a command, hdashrule, which is a cross between LaTeX's ule and PostScript's setdash command. hdashrule draws horizontally dashed rules using the same syntax as ule, but with an additional, setdash-like parameter that specifies the pattern of dash segments and the space between those segments. Because dashrule's rules are constructed internally using ule (as opposed to, e.g., PostScript specials) they are fully compatible with every LaTeX back-end processor. This minor update enables hdashrule to begin a paragraph. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This package is located at http://tug.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/dashrule . CTAN support of simple installation files
by Robin Fairbairns 22 Apr '08

22 Apr '08

Over the years, installing files on a TeX system has become increasingly tiresome. When I started using TeX, in the 80s, most packages would say install the files where (La)TeX can find them (if they gave any advice at all on installation). While this advice was plainly good, it didn't help much since few people would want to do the contrary, and it offered no real hints. However, it didn't matter much: I found it easy, as a complete novice, to guess where the file ought to go. TeX systems have changed a lot since then, and most modern systems use a standard called TDS (TeX Directory Structure) to specify how TeX-files should be arranged on disc. The TDS is pretty straightforward once you've read it, and it will give good a usable answer, about where to put a new file, every time. However, not many people _want_ to read it, and as a result TeX forums are forever being asked how to get TeX to find new files. (I keep rewriting the text in the UK FAQ, in this area, too -- see http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=installthings which doesn't yet mention these installation files.) The TDS is a simple structure, and almost all files can be installed simply by putting them in the right place, and updating a single index. The CTAN network is therefore starting to hold TDS ZIP files, which have a built-in directory structure that matches the TDS. These things have to be built, of course, and we're expecting that package writers will supply them for us. This puts an extra burden on the writer; however, it should make the package user much happier, which in turn must help keep the TeX community lively and active. Nitty gritty details (users): Users can see whether a TDS file is available, when they view the catalogue entry for the package they propose to download. A user should download that file, and unpack it in a TDS directory to which she has access, and then generate a file index for the TDS directory tree. The TDS directory on Unix-like systems will typically be the local tree, or the user's tree ~<userid>/texmf Users of MiKTeX systems should not ordinarily need the TDS files; the management of updates for MiKTeX is very efficient indeed, and it is seldom as much as a week between a (free) package appearing, and there being a new (version of a) MiKTeX package being available. However, in extremis, the user of a MiKTeX system see which trees are available using the MiKTeX Options app, Roots tab; see http://docs.miktex.org/manual/localadditions.html for details. The user may generate an index using texhash under unix-like systems. On an MiKTeX system, use the Refresh FNDB button on the MiKTeX Options app General tab. Nitty gritty details (developers): Package writers should refer to the web page http://www.ctan.org/tds-guidelines.html for details of the file structure we assume. Note that the ZIP file does _not_ contain the texmf/ directory itself; it is made at the texmf/ level. Robin Fairbairns For the CTAN team

CTAN Update: TeXshade v1.18
by CTAN Announcements 16 Apr '08

16 Apr '08

On Wed, 16 Apr 2008 Eric Beitz submitted an update to the texshade package. TeXshade is an alignment shading software completely written in TeX/LaTeX which can process multiple sequence alignments in the .MSF and the .ALN file format. It provides in addition to common shading algorithms special shading modes featuring functional aspects, e.g. charge or hydropathy, and a plenitude of commands for handling shading colours, text styles, labels, legends and even allows the user to define completely new shading modes. TeXshade combines highest flexibility and the habitual TeX output quality—with reasonable time expenditure. Location on CTAN: /macros/latex/contrib/texshade/ Summary description: Update of the DNA and protein sequence alignment LaTeX package TeXshade License type: lppl Announcement text: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Update of the DNA and protein sequence alignment LaTeX package TeXshade (v1.18). It mainly contains bug fixes concerning featurenames, ordering, numbering, and the setends command. Further, T-Coffee shading can now be imported and displayed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This package is located at http://mirror.ctan.org/macros/latex/contrib/texshade/ . More information is at http://tug.ctan.org/info/?id=texshade (if the package is new it may take a day for that information to appear). We are supported by the TeX Users Group http://www.tug.org .
