Donald Knuth has released his so-called TeX tune-up for 2014: new
versions of TeX, Metafont, and assorted texware and mfware programs.
There are no changes in Computer Modern affecting either glyph shapes or
metrics this time.
As usual, the changes in general are both very small and very technical,
nothing that users (even expert users) need be concerned about. Since I
know people will just wonder if I don't describe them, here they are: in
TeX, a space was incorrectly omitted after a null control sequence (if
you cannot imagine what this is, or even if you can, don't worry about
it); and in Metafont, a bit of memory was leaked when a pencircle was
transformed into an axially symmetric pen whose polygon has no point on
the $x$-axis.
An article in the next TUGboat will have all the details. As Knuth says:
> Users can rest assured that I haven't ``broken'' anything in this
> round of improvements. Everyone can upgrade at their convenience.
The TeX Live development sources will updated in due time, and the TL'14
release will contain the new versions. There is no need for updates
in the distributed versions before then.
For those who want to look for themselves, the original source for
Knuth's files is ftp://ftp.stanford.edu/pub/tex/tex14.tar.gz. (You can
compare to the tex08.tar.gz, etc., that are in the same directory.) On
CTAN, the directory is systems/knuth/dist.
Thanks as ever, Don.
Respectfully submitted,

Thomas Griffiths submitted an update to the
uowthesistitlepage
package.
Version number: 2.0
License type: lppl
Summary description: Typesets the title page of your thesis in
accordance with the UOW guidelines.
Announcement text:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Added cosupervisor field. The field works the same as
supervisor field, but is off by default. The field can either
be below the supervisor field or next to it. When next to it
the whole block of supervisors is centred as a single unit. The
default position is below the supervisor field, but the
adjacent style can be tuned on with the horizontal option in
the preamble.
Added the horizontal option. This uses a tabular environment to
put two centred columns in a centred table to place the new
cosupervisor adjacent to the supervisor field. It is off by
default but if you want it on just give horizontal as a option
to the package in the preamble.
Added the report option. Prints a nice little title page for
lab reports and the like. Adjusted the declaration and dummy
text accordingly.
Fixed up the declaration page, reworded it to make it, in my
opinion, a bit neater sounding. Also fixed the declaration for
fullsubject, report and partialsubject so that it is for the
completion of the assessment criteria of class.
Moved the vspace{biggap} and vspace*{fill} so that the
University and School are at the bottom near the date.
Removed some LaTeX crimes: egin...{centering}
end{centering} to centering, excess return lines.
Italicised the requirements.
Removed the bold from all but the title.
Changed the wording — The degree is now conferred not awarded.
Added new pagesize proportional measurements for the margins so
that they scale and the title page now works for small pages
(tested to A5, 12 pt).
Removed lmodern package requirement.
Added `Doctor of Philosophy' as the degree definition if
option phd (or PhD) is given to the package.

Jean-François Burnol submitted an update to the
xint
package.
Version number: 1.09j
License type: lppl
Summary description: Expandable operations on long numbers
Announcement text:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
1.09j 2014/01/09
* The core division routines have been re-written for some (limited)
efficiency gain, more pronounced for small divisors. As a consequence,
the computation with the algorithm given in the user manual of one
thousand digits of Pi is three times faster. Some other small
improvements elsewhere.
* A new macro xintXTrunc is designed to produce thousands or even
tens of thousands of digits of the decimal expansion of a fraction.
Although completely expandable it has its use limited to inside an
|edef|, |write|, |message|, dots. It can thus not be nested as
argument to another package macro.
* xintexpr..
elax can now be used inside an edef without the
xintthe prefix converting the internal format into explicit digit
tokens; it will expand completely and inhibit the error message about
a missing xintthe. This can significantly speed up the use of
xintexpr in a non-expandable contexts, when dealing with numbers
having hundreds of digits.
Notice that contrarily to
umexpr for which he or
umber is
necessary not only to print but also to trigger the computation,
xintthe is only needed for the printing step (previously xintexpr
was already fully expandable under
omannumeral-`0).
* bug-fix: |1.09i| did an unexplainable change to XINT_infloat_zero
which broke the floating point routines for vanishing operands :-((
The first two pages of the user manual give a much clearer view of the
aims and abilities of the package. The manual has more of these
tremendous applications my (singleton) user base enjoy so much!

Scott Pakin submitted an update to the
hyperxmp
package.
Version number: 2.4
License type: lppl
Summary description: Embed XMP metadata within a LaTeX document
Announcement text:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
XMP (eXtensible Metadata Platform) is a mechanism proposed by
Adobe for embedding document metadata within the document itself.
The metadata are designed to be easy to extract, even by programs
that are oblivious to the document's file format. Most of
Adobe's applications store XMP metadata when saving files. Now,
with the hyperxmp package, it is trivial for LaTeX document
authors to store XMP metadata in their documents as well.
hyperxmp integrates seamlessly with hyperref and requires
virtually no modifications to documents that already exploit
hyperref's mechanisms for specifying PDF metadata. The current
version of hyperxmp can embed the following metadata as XMP:
authors, base URL, contact telephone number/postal address/email
address/URL, copyright statement, creation date, document
identifier, document instance identifier, file format, keywords,
language, LaTeX file name, license URL, metadata writer, PDF
version, PDF-generating tool, PDF/A compliance level and version,
primary author's position or title, subject/summary, and title.
hyperxmp is compatible with pdflatex, latex+dvips+ps2pdf,
latex+dvipdfm, xelatex, and lualatex.
Version 2.4 of hyperxmp embeds more precise timestamps (when
possible), uses proper version 4 UUIDs, provides an xmptilde
macro for including tildes in URLs, and includes better support
(thanks to Florian Breitwieser) for producing PDF/A-compliant XMP
metadata.
