It can also be used as a stand-alone editor for vector graphics. The output is a file (with extension .TpX) containing the drawing as LaTeX code or as an includegraphics link to an external file created by the program. User can choose between several output formats. TpX saves its own data in TeX file comments so that the drawing could be loaded into TpX and edited again. This internal TpX format is based on XML and could be understood and edited easily. TpX can import EMF/WMF pictures created by other Windows applications, including many applications producing scientific graphs. In most cases the result is nice, though sometimes imported picture needs some manual editing. So TpX can be used as a EMF-to-any converter. It also allows you to print personal notes for your talk. You can create overlays and display structure information (current section / subsection, table of contents) on your slides. The main feature that distinguishes talk from other presentation classes like beamer or prosper is that it allows the user to define an arbitrary number of slide styles and switch between these styles from slide to slide. This way the slide layout can be adapted to the slide content. For example, the title or contents page of a talk can be given a slightly different layout than the other slides. The talk class makes no restrictions on the slide design whatsoever. The entire look and feel of the presentation can be defined by the user. CTAN TUG node has a new look

The TeX Users Group branch of the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network http://tug.ctan.org has a new web interface. When you visit you will notice a new look, including a wonderful drawing by Duane Bibby. You will also notice an improved organization: directory browsing now includes more information about packages, an introduction for newbies to TeX is right up front, and there is a way to search all package documentation. Many more features will come online in the future. For example, we will have a keyword search of packages, but as yet the packages do not have keywords, so that search is disabled for the moment. Another example is that we will have a more sophisticated upload facility, that for one thing allows authors to enter keywords for their package. There are also some incomplete links, etc. We are working on these features, but rather than wait longer, now is the right time to bring this new system online -- for one thing, the functioning features are already an improvement over what was there. These improvements would not be possible without the support of the user groups, including Dante's travel support for three maintainer's meetings and TUG's purchase of a new site machine with increased power. We gratefully acknowledge that without this support by user groups, this development would not have happened. No doubt people will find bugs, and have comments and feature requests. In particular, the first few days might be rocky :-} We apologize for shortcomings and thank you for your patience. We have set up a mailing list for discussion of this project; see https://lists.dante.de/mailman/listinfo/ctanweb/ . Because archives of this list are available for public viewing you can see if there has already been a discussion of the point. Finally, note that the web interface to other two CTAN core nodes http://www.cam.ctan.org and http://dante.ctan.org/ remain stable throughout this change. New CTAN package: MicroIMP

MicroPress Inc have provided a free (though nosource) distribution of their MicroIMP LaTeX-based word processor. This is release 0.12 of the system, and isn't yet considered a finished product: however, it is believed to be usable. I have installed the distribution on CTAN at systems/win32/microimp. Users may view the directory at http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/systems/win32/microimp/ and the full distribution may be downloaded from http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/systems/win32/microimp/mimp-012.zip I append the README file from the directory; this is an extract from the documentation pdf, which is in the directory (as well as being part of the zip file). Robin Fairbairns For the CTAN team =========== The Concept The idea behind MicroIMP is to reconcile two so far disjoint worlds: the World of the Word Processors and the World of quality technical typesetting. In the World of the Word Processors, where Microsoft Word reigns, the document are easy to make and no learning cycle is required; but the document are often lack in quality and the easiness comes at the cost of sacrificing features. In the World of Quality Technical Typesetting, where TeX reigns, features and quality are abundant; but the learning cost turns off most of the new users dooming TeX to the niche enthusiast market. Enter MicroIMP: an intuitive WYSIWYG document preparation system, based on LaTeX. MicroIMP delivers easiness: no TeX markup needs to be learned; no commands, and no backslashes. WYSIWYG. Ready to use the moment you run it. Don't struggle with the syntax, but Imp with Impunity. MicroIMP delivers power: it is based on a TeX kernel and incorporates TeX formatting techniques; these include math, hyphenation, automatic ligatures, and much else. On Fri, 15 Jul 2005, Martin Hensel submitted version 3.00 of the mhchem bundle to CTAN. Currently, the mhchem bundle consists of two packages: mhchem and rsphrase. The mhchem package provides two commands: one for typesetting chemical molecular formulae and one for typesetting chemical equations with these formulae. The rsphrase package contains the text of all official Risk and Safety (R and S) Phrases that are used to label chemicals. At the time being, these phrases are available in English, German (current spelling), and Danish. It is only due to a very small change in the user-interface. However, I promised myself never to use a sub-optimal user-interface only because of `historical reasons', and so I changed the meaning of the ond command. On Wed, 13 Jul 2005, Alexander Grahn submitted an update to the movie15 package. This package defines includemovie with PDF-1.5 compatibility. Option 'autoplay' causes the media clip to be started right after the page has loaded. This is useful for side by side movie clips to be played back synchronously. On Tue, 12 Jul 2005, Werner LEMBERG submitted font bundles for the Japanese Wadalab fonts which work with the CJK package. . All subfonts now have glyph names compliant to the Adobe Glyph List, making ToUnicode CMaps in PDF documents (created automatically by dvipdfmx) work correctly. . CTAN update: numprint

On Mon, 11 Jul 2005, Harald Harders submitted an update to the numprint package. Location on CTAN: macros/latex/contrib/numprint/ License: LPPL numprint.sty: Print numbers with a separator every three digits and convert numbers given as 12345.6e789 to 12,345,6cdot 10^{789}. Numbers are printed in the current mode (text or math) in order to use the correct font. Many things, including the decimal sign, the thousand separator, as well as the product sign can be changed by the user, e.g., to reach 12,345.6 imes 10^{789}. If requested, numprint can round numbers to a given number of digits. If an optional argument is given it is printed upright as unit. Numbers can be rounded to a given number of digits. The package supports an automatic, language-dependent change of the number format. Tabular alignment using the tabular(*), array, tabularx, and longtable environments (similar to the dcolumn and rccol packages) is supported using all features of numprint.
