removal of mpfnmark

the package macros/latex/contrib/other/mpfnmark seemed to offer interesting functionality, but unfortunately had a bug that meant that in many cases it simply didn't work. the author has not responded to suggestions that the bug be mended. i therefore added a working version of the functionality to the latest version of footmisc (macros/latex/contrib/supported/footmisc), some time ago. the ctan team has now decided that the mpfnmark package itself should be removed; it will disappear from mirrors over the next few days. users should switch to using footmisc, instead. v3.3 of uk tex faq on ctan and web

i have installed this version of the faq to the usual places. as usual, for a major release, there are a few more questions answered, and a few more wrinkles in old material sorted out. an innovation, this time, is the files pdf-newfaq.lab and pdf-letterfaq.lab; these give the relationship between question labels and question titles, for the two forms of pdf that i distribute. the files are actually output of a toc-like mechanism; i've not actually convinced myself of a way to typeset them, yet :-( robin fairbairns. who _won't_ be speaking at the uk tug meeting about faqs and things, because of the lack of any voice.

I generally intend them to be used as a basis for modifications. For that reason I avoided the use of docstrip: keeping the source and comments in one file makes hacking easier. I tested them with recent version of heblatex from http://ivritex.sf.net/ . Specifically, they use hebalef rather than alef, and thus will not work with heblatex 2.0c from babel. i have contacted david carlisle, the author of type1cm.sty, and with his permission i have corrected the errors in the package that i know about. i have installed the new version of the package source on ctan - macros/latex/contrib/supported/type1cm/type1cm.fdd there were two errors i knew of (in the coding of the use of cmbx and cmti fonts), and bob tennent pointed out a third, in the use of euex10. if anyone should spot any further problem with this new version of the package, they should report it to me and i'll put it right on the archive. there shouldn't be any, since i've scanned the file for other errors ... but i missed euex :-( Robin Fairbairns For the CTAN team

i have just installed, on ctan and on the web, a new release of the uk tex faq. changes: 1. this is the first time for ages that i've looked at the faq with an editorial eye: this occupied some of the time on my holiday... 2. yet more rearrangement of the section structure of the faq; in particular introducing new fonts and graphics sections. the fonts section hasn't had much technical work (though there is one new contributed answer in there), but the first three answers in graphics are completely new, and replace the old using postscript graphics. 3. several corrections and enhancements to existing answers, from contributors. 4. a select few additions from my (huge) backlog of questions to be answered. As the years before there will be a CTAN snapshot on CD ROM produced by DANTE, the German language users' group, and Lehmanns bookstore in Germany. My time schedule isn't fixed, yet, but expect that I will copy the data from CTAN to my machine about mid of September. i have just installed a new version (v5.0) of footmisc.dtx on ctan this represents a substantial revision of the previous version. 1. new package options 1a: side - put notes into marginpars rather than at the foot of the page; this option isn't terribly satisfactory, but it addresses at least one user's requirements 1b: ragged - set notes ragged right in their box; also a parameter footnotelayout that determines how the notes are to be set 1c: hang - set footnote marker flush with the margin and hang-indent the footnote text according to the value of footnotemargin 2. new commands 2a: setfnsymbol and DefineFNsymbols - these commands permit control of the way fnsymbol-style footnote marks operate (i.e., they allow you to define the sequence of symbols) 2b: mpfootnotemark - like footnotemark, but referring to minipage footnotes if you're inside one 2c: footref - make reference to a footnote label as if a footnotemark (this is a copy of a command in the memoir class, at the suggestion of peter wilson) 3. improvements 3a: i've worked on the documentation somewhat. several things are noticeably better, i think. 3b: the multiple option has been completely re-implemented using a scheme that is compatible with alexander rozhenko's manyfoot package -- i.e., his package and my package will each respect the other's footnote marks when checking for multiple footnote markers. I would recommend installing it in the following way: Put the packed archive preview-latex-0.7.3.tar.gz under support/preview-latex/ and unpack the README from it to support/preview-latex/README Create a symbolic link from support/preview-latex/preview-latex.tar.gz to preview-latex-0.7.3.tar.gz so that people can always get the newest version under this name. Unpack preview-0.7.3.tar.gz in the directory macros/latex/contrib/supported/preview/ It contains just README-preview, preview.dtx and preview.ins. The reason is that the preview.dtx file can also be used as a standalone LaTeX style for extracting selected elements from a LaTeX source into separate pages of a DVI file. Previous versions of preview-latex can be deleted. Here are the release notes: Release notes for version 0.7.3 of the preview-latex package: preview-latex could be the greatest thing since sliced bread, were it not just the same. Sliced bread provides you with a handle on conveniently sized chunks of the real matter as well as unhampered creative freedom for the space in between. It obliterates the unwieldy handling of loaf-sized chunks and puts the bread right on your plate where it belongs. preview-latex similarly chops unwieldy pages of subpixel-accurate LaTeX previews into handily sized fully dressed chunks (such as single formulas) that get placed right into your Emacs/XEmacs source buffer, freeing the desktop space otherwise required for separate carving plates, while keeping the original source readily accessible. You get to have your eye candy and edit it, too. The employed style file preview.sty is independently useful for extraction of selected text elements as images. The package is released under the GNU Public License (GPL). At the current point of time, at least GNU Emacs-21.1 under the X window system, AUC TeX (11.11 recommended, see below), a working LaTeX installation and GhostScript are required. This version also supports XEmacs-21. For best results, at least version 21.4.9 is recommended since it incorporates several fixes necessary for proper operation of preview-latex. Under the Windows operating system, we have had positive reports for both native and Cygwin ports of XEmacs. Recent CVS versions of GNU Emacs could conceivably be made to run preview-latex under Windows, but we have had no reports for this combination yet. Release 0.7.3 is a consolidation release containing mostly bug fixes. It has to disable a broken security implementation that persists into version 7.05 of GNU GhostScript. A complete lack of developer response makes it likely that future versions of GhostScript will not work unless preview-latex gets configured to disable security for them as well. For further information, please read the PROBLEMS file or the respective manual section. One new feature is dumping of precompiled preambles in order to facilitate faster regeneration of previews. You can do this via a key combination or from the Preview menu which has been moved to the menu bar from the LaTeX menu. This further improves the already impressive performance even on bottom-line computers. The README file provides adequate information for preinstalled distributions. The INSTALL file contains a special section with advice for package providers. User feedback about errors and suggested feature improvements is welcome and heeded. For the binary RPMs, you will need the preview-latex-common RPM as well as the Emacs-flavor specific RPM. The RPMs require a few packages that should be readily available in current distributions. As of RH 7.3, Emacs-21.2 and GhostScript-6.52 are included. The current RedHat beta Limbo contains the security-impaired GhostScript-7.05 (see above).
