Particularly, is the B1 encoding a good way to go? after some discussion, i understand that while the new version of auncial is intended as a replacement for the existing one, Peter would rather it stood on its own while potential users evaluate it. i have also discussed the proposed B1 encoding within the latex project, and we have agreed that there's no point in opposing it (its structure fits the stated requirements for latex-compatible encodings). i have therefore installed b1encoding for review at http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/b1encoding/ and for download from http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/b1encoding.zip and the new auncial font set for review at http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/fonts/auncial-new/ and for download from http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/fonts/auncial-new.zip we do of course anticipate that fonts/auncial-new will ultimately take the place of fonts/bookhands/auncial i have created a catalogue entry for b1encoding, and and entry for auncial-new is still in preparation. thanks, peter, for the uploads. UK TeX FAQ, v3.15 installed

I've just installed a new version of the UK TeX FAQ as an interactive entity on the web: http://www.tex.ac.uk/faq and as sources on CTAN: http://www.tex.ac.uk/help/uk-tex-faq/ There are now 396 questions answered in the FAQ, but the total number available is mostly limited by my spare time and energy. Those with an urge to submit suggestions for questions (preferably with answers) are urged to do so. Those who find something in the FAQ plain wrong (or merely confusing) are equally urged to do so. Details of such submissions (including an Email address) are to be found in http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=newans (which includes an email address in one of its URLs). The tutorials section has been split into more manageable (and hopefully useful chunks (see above). The address for proposals for FAQ improvement has changed; the steady stream of requests for help, to the old address, from people who hadn't even read the FAQ, became too much for me. I have removed my name and address everywhere it appears in the FAQ; this follows the strong perception that I am widely despised on the texhax list, and is done in the hope that these people won't be put off using the FAQ as a result. Coming up: I have a far more efficient CGI engine for serving answers to the web: its output still needs tuning and more testing is needed before release. I am investigating mechanisms whereby I can point to the CTAN catalogue from FAQ answers. I feel I can write fuller descriptions of individual packages in the catalogue than I can in the FAQ; moreover, the catalogue has links to on-line documentation, which has always been a problem for FAQ readers.

CTAN update: xcolor 2.08

On Sat, 26 Nov 2005 Uwe Kern submitted an update to the xcolor package. This package pProvides easy driver-independent access to several kinds of color tints, shades, tones, and mixes of arbitrary colors. It allows a user to select a document-wide target color model and offers complete tools for conversion between eight color models. Additionally, there is a command for alternating row colors plus repeated non-aligned material (like horizontal lines) in tables. Colors can be mixed like color{red!30!green!40!blue}.
