problems with tex.ac.uk ctan node

the machine failed at 06xx gmt this morning (2012-11-22), and we finally put it back in service just before 1500 gmt. the principal problem proved to be a failed disc in the archive raid set; the hardware conspired to prevent us realising this at first (i'm not sure how it managed to do this). the machine (which is the property of the uk tex users group) is now running with a disc from the (host) university department's stores. (it will probably not be missed, since we seldom install discs as small as that, nowadays.) i apologise for the inconvenience; i have an action to specify a cloud machine to take over when i retire, and have not got around to working on that ... for months, now.
