CTAN Update: Version 1.18 of pgf/TikZ

On Wed, 13 Jun 2007 Till Tantau submitted version 1.18of his PGF/TikZ package. Location on CTAN: /graphics/pgf License: Mixed LPPL/GPL/FDL PGF is a macro package for creating graphics. It is platform- and format-independent and works together with the most important TeX backend drivers, including pdftex and dvips. It comes with a user-friedly syntax layer called TikZ. Its usage is similar to pstricks and the standard picture environment. Unlike pstricks, it can produce either PostScript or PDF output, and works with plain (pdf-)TeX, (pdf-)LaTeX, and ConTeXt. Release notes: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This new version of pgf/TikZ contains new features and fixes a number of bugs. A notable new feature is the new math library due to Mark Wibrow, which allows you to use fancy mathematical expressions directly inside TikZ. This release also includes a matrix library, which simplifies alignments. There are now commands that allow you to extract pictures into separate files more asily. Some users will also enjoy the new calendar support. Finallly, if you have always been looking for an easy way to create a triangular shape, have a look at Mark's regular polygon shape. Although this version should already be perfectly usable and reasonably bug-free, it is still a beta-version. Release 1.20 will be the next stable version. I will release it within a few weeks, once I got feedback on this version. Extended loss of service at cam.ctan.org

The Cambridge CTAN services suffered an extended failure of their network support, from approx. 1130 BST yesterday morning (2007-06-13) to approx. 0715 BST this morning. (We have not yet had a coherent explanation of what went wrong, from our network service provider, but it is clear that the backup routing and other redundancy provisions simply didn't work.) We therefore suffered extended outage of ftp.tex.ac.uk (aka cam.ctan.org) www.tex.ac.uk, including the UK TeX FAQ, and rsync.tex.ac.uk My apologies to all our users. Should it turn out that something other than ordinary incompetence was the cause of the failures, interested parties will no doubt be able to read all about it, some time soon, on the risks forum (or newgroup comp.risks). Story Location on CTAN: /macros/latex/contrib/jj_game Summary description: A LaTeX class to construct Jeopardy-like games License type: lppl Announcement text: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a major update of the jj_game class that was first published 9/3/2000 and made available through my web site at http://www.math.uakron.edu/~dpstory/jj_game.html JJ_game class is a Jeopardy-like game in which you compete for cyber money by answering questions composed by the game author. The questions can be multiple choice, math fill-in or text fill-in. Since the year 2000, many techniques have been developed, and this version of jj_game has many enhancements an new features: (1) Added the ability to post math and text fill-in questions (2) Enhanced control over the color design of the game (3) The distribution comes with 9 designs (color schemes) jeopardy, florida, iceland, hornet, qatar, norway, germany, bahamas and spain (4) Five general graphical backgrounds provided, and two additional ones that are used in a custom design (5) language option, currently english and german. Additional languages will be added as translators volunteer The basic game can be constructed using dvipsone, dvips, pdftex and dvipdfm (untested in this version). Additionally, there is a pro option that requires the use of dvipsone or dvips and Acrobat Pro 7.0 or later with distiller. I have used the jj_game class in some of my classes for extra credit; for this purpose, the following features were developed: (6) A forcredit option that forces the student---assuming the contestant is taking the game for credit---to enter his/her name. (7) With the pro option, layers are used to hide the questions from the contestant before he/she selects a question from the game board. When the contestant selects a question, the question is made visible. The questions are in layers with a no print attribute, so the contestant cannot print out the game and distribute the questions to other contestants even if the questions are visible.
